Stairs Of The In Between, 2022

Where are you currently based?
I am currently based in Berlin.

What led you to create your work, "Stairs Of The In Between”?
I am fascinated about a thought that life itself is only an in-between stage that we go through. “Stairs Of The In between” experiments with the concept of life, death and after, approaching the topic with an idea that on top of the stairs awaits a door that creates an illusion of success but actually will take you back down to climb the stairs all over again.

What is the relationship between color and geometry in your work, “Stairs Of The In Between”?
I would describe the relationship of color and geometry in “stairs of the in between” as a meeting point for fear and acknowledgement. The photograph is built around entering the unknown with many possible endings, where pastel shades are soothing the sharp edges.

Do you have a certain approach to color selection?
Strong colors are one of the most important things for me when I conceptualize and create my artwork. I often first take a glance at the composition and color. Then the story I want to tell forms based on those two things. “Stairs of in between” explores with the topic of heaven and hell inspired by pop culture, which the combination of colors represents.

Could you take us through your creative process?
My creative process almost always starts with a place. Locations inspire me and immediately make me think of a story I want to tell. Especially empty, forgotten places that are stuck in time. After that I start to modify the space and this is often an impulsive part of my working, which I see as an opportunity to be playful and listen to what my mind comes up with. When creating the scene, I find my inspiration from objects, furniture, geometric shapes and the possibilities to compose the image. When the set is done, I focus on character building. My work is based on emotions, thoughts and memories, and my characters are descriptions of feelings, which are difficult to express without building a body around them.

When it comes to the more technical parts of my process, I create my photographs using a tripod and a ten-second timer. I enjoy the rush of operating with short time frames between preparing and posing, and the moment of surprise after running in front of the camera and seeing the photo for a first time. In post editing, I often use Photoshop to multiply myself to create the relationship between characters, and add the colors that didn’t exist on the moment of taking the photograph.

Vilma Leino is a Finnish born, Berlin based photographer. She was born in 1999 and has been using photography as a medium since 2015. Her work focuses on self-portraiture, which she uses to reflect inner emotions, solitude, memories and personal experiences. In her work, she creates female characters with untold stories and experiments with strong color schemes, composition and human body. The photographs often balance between beauty and horror, and she uses humor as an aspect to lighten up darker subjects. Her photographs are a one-woman show, where being in control and the fear of losing it are in a constant dialogue, forming a story about personal growth, where fears are forming into strength.
